Cry Baby
Cry Baby was the “Ah-Ha” moment of writing the EP, where the sound and concept clicked in place immediately for me. Cooper Holzman (executive producer of the project), sent over a rough instrumental that he had made for me. This was a new process for me, as I typically write from scratch on the guitar in my bedroom, but I was drawn to the sonic elements immediately. I played it on my car speakers for my boyfriend on the way home from a museum, and made him pull over so I could start writing to it. The song was written in 15 minutes. The next day I went into Cooper’s studio and we immediately knew this song would influence every song that followed.
Cry Baby is a celebration of love in a lot of ways. In my first EP, and at that time of my life, I was so hesitant and terrified of losing love, that I couldn’t genuinely enjoy or understand it. This song is a testament to letting love in, the nuances included. There’s an isolating part of love that I don’t think is talked about enough, where it is difficult to relate to other people when you are in the throes of your own universe with another person. Cry Baby talks about the intensity of a kind of love like this, and a willingness to give myself to another person, while being cognizant of the isolation that can accompany it.
